What to Do in Destin When It Rains

Updated

It is raining. What happens to the day?

Rain on its own cancels much less than visitors expect. What cancels trips here is wind, and the two do not always arrive together — a grey drizzly morning with flat water runs fine, and a bright breezy one may not.

What happens to each of the seven

Three groups, not two. Most planning pages collapse this into cancelled or fine, and the middle group — it runs, and it is a lesser version of what you booked — is where most people actually end up.

Still worth doing

Runs, and is still the thing you booked.

  • Fishing charters

Rain bothers people more than fish. The captain's decision will be about swell, not about staying dry.

  • Private boat charters

The one format where a captain can rebuild the day around the weather rather than cancelling it.

Runs, but diminished

Goes ahead as a lesser version of itself. Worth a phone call rather than a cancellation.

  • Crab Island

You are already wet. The problem is that rain usually arrives with wind, and wind is what spoils the sandbar.

  • Dolphin cruises

Short, covered on many boats, and the animals do not mind. You will.

  • Pontoon rentals

Visibility for handling the boat matters more than comfort, and heavy rain takes both.

  • Sunset cruises

The boat goes. Whether there is a sunset to look at is the part nobody controls.

Effectively gone

Either it does not run, or what runs is not what you paid for.

  • Snorkeling

Rain in the days before is what clouds the water, so the damage is often already done before the morning you booked.

You already booked something

Ask the operator two things: whether they run in rain at all, and who decides — some cancel on their own judgement, some leave it to you and charge either way.

This is where we stop being useful, and we would rather say so than invent something. We publish no indoor content.

We publish nothing indoors, and will not pretend otherwise. All seven activities we cover happen on or in the water. We do not publish guides to museums, aquariums, arcades or shopping, so we cannot honestly hand you an indoor plan. What we can do is tell you which of the seven still runs, what happens to a booking you already hold, and which day to move things to.

Ask about what still runs

The 2 things above this condition does not take away. Availability on a day like today is the operator's answer, not ours.

Ask us about fishing charters

We have no booking link for this yet, so this goes to a person instead. Tell us the shape of your trip and we will come back with options that actually fit — no availability held, no obligation, and nothing booked.

Confirm before you pay: Whether passengers are covered by the vessel's licence, what is in season on your date, what happens to the catch, and how much motion to expect.

Ask us about private boat charters

We have no booking link for this yet, so this goes to a person instead. Tell us the shape of your trip and we will come back with options that actually fit — no availability held, no obligation, and nothing booked.

Confirm before you pay: Which specific vessel the quote covers, whether you can return early and what that changes, and whether fuel, cleaning and gratuity are inside the price.
