The mistake is treating a rain forecast as a cancellation. In the warm months, storms here commonly build through the afternoon rather than sitting over the whole day, so most plans need relocating by a few hours rather than replacing.
Work through this before you cancel anything. In particular, call the operator before you assume the trip is off — that call is free and the answer is often not what the app implied.
Read the forecast properly
- Look at the hourly forecast, not the daily rain icon — it flattens a two-hour storm and an all-day soak into the same symbol
- Check the wind separately. Wind cancels boat trips; rain often does not
- Note whether the weather is arriving or leaving; a clearing morning is a very different day
Call before you cancel
- Call the operator rather than cancelling yourself — a guest cancellation and an operator cancellation usually have different consequences
- Ask whether they can move you to another slot this week rather than refunding
- Ask whether a protected-water alternative is possible if the Gulf front is the problem
- Get whatever you agree in writing, by message or email
A credit is not a refund. On a short trip, a credit you cannot use before you travel home is a loss — say so on the call.
Rearrange rather than replace
- Move the affected plan into your unbooked day, which is what that day exists for
- Swap the day for the beach or pool if the weather is passing
- Use the window for the one errand the trip needs — provisioning, laundry, the long lunch
- Resist booking something new to fill the gap; a rain day is a good day to do less
Have named in advance
- Indoor option one, and how far away it is
- Indoor option two, walkable if possible
- The operator contact for each booked activity
- Which day you will move a cancelled plan to

It is not a booking, a reservation or a safety certification. It contains no prices, no operator names and no local phone numbers we have not verified. Anything an operator tells you overrides anything here, and the beach warning flags and lifeguard direction at your access override everything.
