Destin Red Flag Days: What They Affect

There is a red flag flying. What does that mean for our plans?

A beach flag is an instruction about swimming from the beach. It is not an instruction to a boat, and this is the single most common misunderstanding we see. Read the board at your own access for what the flag currently means and what is being asked of you — we do not reproduce that here, because the board is current and a web page is not.

What happens to each of the seven

Three groups, not two. Most planning pages collapse this into cancelled or fine, and the middle group — it runs, and it is a lesser version of what you booked — is where most people actually end up.

Still worth doing

Runs, and is still the thing you booked.

Runs, but diminished

Goes ahead as a lesser version of itself. Worth a phone call rather than a cancellation.

  • Crab Island

    A boat trip, but one whose whole purpose is standing in the water. Ask the operator what they do on a flagged day.

  • Pontoon rentals

    The rental company sets its own rules about where you may go and whether you may swim.

  • Snorkeling

    An in-water trip on a day the beach is flagged is exactly the conversation to have with the operator before you go.

Effectively gone

Either it does not run, or what runs is not what you paid for.

Ask the operator directly. They are the ones who decide whether their trip runs, and they will know before you do.

Treat the flag as information about the beach and ask separately about the boat. Two different decisions, two different people making them.
