First Time in Destin: Where to Start

Updated

Nobody in the group has done any of this. Where should we start?

Meets the criterion (4 of 7)

  • Crab Island

Nothing to learn. Standing in warm shallow water is the activity.

What this cannot tell you: Depth varies across the bar and with the tide. Treat 'waist-deep' as a description, not a guarantee.

  • Dolphin cruises

Board and sit. There is nothing to be new at.

  • Private boat charters

The captain absorbs everything you would otherwise have to learn.

  • Sunset cruises

Nothing is asked of you beyond getting aboard.

Falls outside it (3 of 7)

Shown with the reason, because “why not” is usually more useful than the shortlist — and because a table that hides its exclusions is telling you what to book.

  • Fishing charters

The fishing is taught aboard. The motion is not, and that is the part that catches people out.

  • Pontoon rentals

No licence required of most visitors, but somebody is responsible all day and that person does not get a holiday.

  • Snorkeling

The gear takes ten minutes to get used to and open water takes longer. Comfort, not skill, is the barrier.
