Destin sits between two bodies of water that behave differently, and understanding that is genuinely useful rather than trivia. The Gulf gives you the famous sand and surf. The bay gives you protected, calmer water — and it is where Crab Island is.
The practical payoff is weather resilience: when the Gulf front is rough or flagged, the bay is frequently still pleasant.

The Gulf side is where you go for the beach experience: sand, surf and the water colour Destin is known for.
The bay side is where most boating happens and where conditions are calmer. Knowing this gives you a fallback on rough days rather than a lost one.
