Destin or Miramar Beach? The Choice Most Visitors Make Without Realising

Miramar Beach is not a different destination from Destin so much as the next stretch of the same coast, and a great many trips booked as "Destin" are in fact in Miramar Beach. The listing often says Destin because that is the name people search.
That makes this the comparison most visitors never consciously make, and the one most likely to produce a mismatch — not because either is worse, but because the harbour is the thing Destin is organised around, and Miramar Beach is not organised around it.
The short answer
Stay in Destin proper if boats are the reason you are coming. The harbour is where the charter fleet, the excursion docks and the Crab Island departures are, and being near it removes a drive from every water day.
Stay in Miramar Beach if the beach itself is the plan. It is quieter, the beachfront is more residential in character, and you are still close enough to reach the harbour when you want it.

No, though it is often marketed that way. It is a separate community immediately east along the same coast, in Walton County rather than Okaloosa. Many rentals advertised as Destin are physically in Miramar Beach.
Can you reach Destin harbour easily from Miramar Beach?
Yes — it is a straightforward drive west, and plenty of visitors do it daily. What it is not is walkable, and in season the road between them carries the traffic of both.
