Both put your group on a private boat. The difference is who is working. A rental hands you the helm and the responsibility; a charter hands you a captain and takes both away.
The tiebreaker is rarely money. It is whether driving a boat would be a treat for somebody in your group, or a job nobody applied for.
The short answer
Rent when a qualified, willing adult genuinely wants to drive and the plan is simple — out to the sandbar and back.
Charter when nobody wants the responsibility, children or grandparents raise the stakes, or the day includes stops a rental cannot safely improvise.

Questions that settle it
