Destin Boat Day Checklist

Updated

Boat days go wrong in three predictable places: arriving late, arriving unprepared for sun, and discovering something about the boat that should have been asked about on the phone.

This runs in time order — the night before, the morning of, and the last five minutes at the dock.

The night before

  • Confirm the departure point, which is not always where the booking page implies
  • Confirm the departure time and how early they want you there
  • Check the wind forecast, not just the rain
  • Pack the cooler if food and drink are permitted, within any size limit they gave you
  • Charge everything, and put a dry bag by the door

The morning of

  • Sunscreen applied before you leave, not on the boat
  • More water than you expect, insulated
  • Leave earlier than the map says in season, and allow for parking
  • Bring the confirmation, in case signal is poor at the dock
  • Everyone uses a bathroom before boarding if there is no head aboard

Before you leave the dock

  • Ask where the life jackets are and get children fitted with theirs now
  • Confirm the return time, and confirm whether you can come in early
  • Ask where shade is and claim it for whoever needs it most
  • Agree with your group who is watching which child
  • If you are driving the boat, take the orientation seriously and ask the questions now

Afterwards

  • Sweep for phones, keys, sunglasses and one shoe
  • Rinse gear before it goes in the car
  • If it went well, ask the captain what they would suggest next time

What this checklist is not

It is not a booking, a reservation or a safety certification. It contains no prices, no operator names and no local phone numbers we have not verified. Anything an operator tells you overrides anything here, and the beach warning flags and lifeguard direction at your access override everything.
