Fort Walton Beach: The Other Side of the Pass

Fort Walton Beach and Destin sit either side of East Pass, and people treat them as interchangeable far more often than the geography justifies.

The short answer
Fort Walton Beach and the Okaloosa Island area sit west of the pass. Destin and its harbour sit east of it. If your bookings leave from the Destin harbour, which side you sleep on adds a bridge to every trip.
The upside is beach access with more distance from harbour-area crowds. The trade is real in both directions and depends almost entirely on how many fixed departures your week contains.
Two towns, one pass
The pass is not a formality between these two places. It is the reason they developed differently, and it is why a booking made on one side is a genuine journey from the other rather than a short hop.
Destin's identity is built around the harbour and the fleet in it. The Fort Walton Beach side is a town in its own right with its own beaches, and visitors who choose it are usually choosing less concentration of holiday activity rather than more.
